Guncho for PICO 8
GUNCHO for PICO-8
Howdy, gunslinger!
Bandits are taking over the town and you're the only gunslinger around that can stop them. Battle through 5 bandit camps in this turn based rogue-like western to win the lucrative bounty or die trying.
How to play
This game uses gamepad and keyboard controls and involves rotating with left and right buttons. The player may take the following actions on their turn:
- Move - Select and move to a free tile
- Revolver (Shoot/Reload) - Aim at a direction and shoot at a target or reload bullet in empty chamber
- Punch - Select a target next to you and push it
- Sprint - Perform two move actions
- Bullet Hail - Unload all bullets and reload all bullets
Note that the revolver will turn clock-wise or counter-clockwise when moving or shooting.
The following bandits are at the camps and they all come with their own behavior:
The Axeman Keep him away! That bandit swings the axe like a mad man.
The Gunman A bandit with a gun. Is not afraid to shoot you at the first opportune moment that he has you in his sights.
The Trapper Spent a lot of time in the forests hunting wild animals. They carry a big bear trap and wishes you stay put so he can push said trap at you.
The Sapper That one crazy bandit with dynamite sticks who wants to see the world go up in a blaze of fire, with you in that. All other bandits flee if he sets the fuse of one dynamite.
The Boss Man The fastest gun in the west. Also takes two turns because he's a cheat. |
Protips
- Do keep in mind that explosives also push objects around. So keep away from traps and other bandits so they don't get in your way.
- Make sure there is no iron packing gunner bandit behind the bandit you're shooting at. On next turn you'll be persuaded to eat some dirt by that bandit.
- It is not only the trapper guy who can push stuff. You are also able to push his traps on other gringos. Same goes with sapper's dynamite sticks.
- When the sapper places some dynamite sticks don't panic, you still have time and all other bandits start to scram. If one of those sticks starts to fizz it's time to put the licks in.
- Real cowboy bounty hunters don't wait for something to happen, they reload their guns.
- Once you reach the last camp, do keep in mind that the boss man takes two actions per turn. He is the best of the west after all.

A beautiful game! Also, a challenging Level 5 :-)
Wow, I didn't know you could make such cool stuff in Pico-8 :D
Fun, simple game!
Wish there was a way to back out of movement (specifically sprinting I think), especially when all moves turn out to be invalid, since it basically locks the game, unless I'm missing something. Otherwise very tight, fun design!
The soft-lock issue that happened in some cases with sprinting should now be fixed.
As for functionality for backing out, a real cowboy don't back out from a fight. ;-)
UI could use some work. Having to go back to a menu to select an action is awkward. As a suggestion, up and down are free to cycle through actions.
The latest update lets you now cycle the actions with up and down buttons. Thanks for the suggestion.
No, thank you! It's greatly improved now, but if you ever revisit this, being able to see what action is next (or previous) in the cycle (or just being able to see the whole cycle), without having to go back to the menu would be nice
This is so cool! Good work!
